Wayne Henry Schurman was born on April 12, 1938, in Lacona, Iowa to Ed and Mildred (Ohnemus) Schurman. Wayne attended country school before attending high school in Lacona where he graduated with the class of 1956.

Wayne went on to serve in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. While in the Army, he served with the Old Guard Regiment in Washington, D.C.  Some of the duties he performed with the Old Guard was serving as security to important dignitaries visiting the D.C. area. One of his most memorable moments was guarding Queen Elizabeth while she was in D.C. He was also on military duty during the Eisenhower inauguration. He performed in many military funerals in the Arlington National Cemetery, including the firing squad burial detail. In 1957, he went to Jamestown, VA and participated in the reenactment of the 350th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown. Fifty years later, he and Marilyn returned to Washington, D.C. to attend the Old Guard Reunion.

After discharge from the Army, Wayne farmed with Giles Dittmer for many years. He later went to work at Armstrong/Pirelli until he retired in 2000.

Wayne enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals and playing country music on his guitar. He and Jo loved to take off on country roads, looking for bald eagles, deer, and any other wildlife. Wayne loved taking his grandsons fishing. He enjoyed playing card games especially solo, cribbage, and pitch, and he's probably still telling us what cards we played wrong.

Wayne married Marilyn Ripperger in July 1960. The couple was blessed with 5 children: Marcia, Marty, Shelly, Jolene, and Jackie. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Marilyn; children: Marcia (David) Krieger, Shelly (Dave) Reynolds, Jolene Schurman, and Jackie (Dave) Squier; grandchildren: Bart (Jordynn Finer) Stanley, Cody (April) Reynolds, Chase (Sammy) Reynolds, and Casey (Maggie) Dollison; great grandchildren: Lola, Theo, Gretta, and Jayna; siblings: Bernard (Collette) Schurman, Loren Schurman, Richard (Rae) Schurman, and Dennis Schurman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mildred; son, Marty Schurman; and siblings: Elvin, Marlene, and Lyle.
