He attended school at Dallas, Harvey, and for a short time at Roosevelt in Des Moines. He graduated from Dallas High School in 1943. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy, although he wanted to be on a ship, he was stationed in Hawaii for two years. He was married to Fern Crouse on December 31, 1948. They were blessed with four children: Gail, Marva, Gary, and Marlo. He worked as an X-ray tech at the VA Hospital for a time and also at Cary's Nursery in Des Moines. Walter started a home painting company, working in Des Moines and surrounding areas for many years. In 1990, the family moved to rural Chariton. Walter had always kept livestock on his acreages, but after moving to the farm he was able to raise cattle and other livestock with his son and grandsons. Walter rode all over the farm on his four-wheeler and ranger checking out the cows and enjoying the scenery. He was not afraid to try new things on the farm, such as introducing Bermuda Grass to the area, and he loved to look for new bulls and other things to benefit the farm on the Craig's list and the internet. He loved gardening and his fruit trees, always sharing his produce with others. Walter's greatest joy was his family; he adored his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was extremely proud of them all. He was a prankster and enjoyed teasing and joking. He was a little stubborn and hard-headed, but he was kind and soft-hearted. Walter was always quick to help young people with an encouraging word or a helpful hand, he loved to see young people succeed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern in 2012; and his siblings: Edward, Melvin, Helen, Violet, Lois and Louise. Walter will be greatly missed by his children: Gail (Betty) Lundy, Marva (Petey) Marasco, Gary (Sara) Lundy, and Marlo (Les) White; 13 grandchildren: Vonda (Mike) Hamrick, Chad (Dana) Lundy, Adam Marasco, Ashley (Aaron) Marasco, Frankie (Ceri) Marasco, Mackenzie (Matt) Hunkele, Coady (Andria) Lundy, Dillon (Jamie) Lundy, Riley Rector, Connor Lundy, Carson Rector, Emma Rector, and Travis White; 17 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
