Thelma Hohl

Thelma Scribner Hohl, age 102, of Albia, Iowa died Friday, October 6, 2006 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia. She was born November 14, 1903 in Bluff Creek Township in Monroe County, Iowa to George W. and Deborah (Neill) Scribner. She married Francis Marion Hohl on December 19, 1926. He died May 20, 1933. Thelma was educated in rural county schools and at Eddyville High School, where she graduated in 1923. She attended college at Iowa State College and at William Penn College. Later she concentrated her studies at Drake University, where she received her Junior Educational Degree in 1951 and her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1957. After receiving her degrees, she continued to take courses, mostly during the summer, at Drake, Parsons College, William Penn and Northeast Missouri State College. Her career as a teacher began in rural schools of Monroe, Mahaska and Marion Counties. Two of these assignments were the former Bluff Creek and Forest Hill schools in Monroe County. She taught second grade in the Eddyville schools from 1947 to 1951 and joined the Albia Community Schools in the fall of 1951. Her service in Albia included the Washington and Lincoln schools. She retired in 1969 after a total of 35 years teaching. Beyond family, teaching and her friends, Thelma has had a wide range of interests. These include gardening, crafts, birds, genealogy, her church (First Christian Church in Albia), Eastern Star, PEO and the Leisure Lounge. She has also traveled extensively and has had such diverse experiences as the New York WorldÂ?s Fair in 1939 and a trip to the Holy Land at age 83. Thelma is survived by one niece, Dorothy Riley of Centerville; two nephews, A. Kent Scribner of Sioux Falls, SD and Bruce Scribner of Palm Springs, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Helen Q. Scribner and Alice Scribner Patton; and two brothers, George Eugene Scribner and Virgil Scribner. Thelma has donated her body to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the First Christian Church in Albia with Rev. Lynda Carlson officiating. No visitation is planned. Memorials have been established to the AlzheimerÂ?s Association and may be sent to the Winfield Funeral Home, 116 Benton Ave. West, Albia, Iowa 52531.
