Sonja L. South

Funeral services for Sonja L. South, 80, of Knoxville will be Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, November 8^th, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville.

Memorials may be made in care of her family and will be designated at a later date. 

Sonja Lou Marshall was born June 27, 1943, in Knoxville, Iowa to Asa and Ellen Robinson Marshall. Being one of thirteen children, she always knew the importance of family. She went to Knoxville High School with the Class of 1962. Her mother died at a young age and Sonja took over the role of caring for her younger siblings. And that is what Sonja was throughout her life, a caretaker. It was always in her heart to look after others and her family.

Sonja was married to William Lawrence South and blessed with four children: Suzie, Bill, Larry, and Asa. This family grew into many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored and cared for. She was always most happy when surrounded by family. She enjoyed attending their events and special days, and she loved to have everyone together for holidays, especially Thanksgiving. She was the best cook; everyone loved her pies and chicken and noodles. Her little dogs were special to her as well as raising chickens. 

Sonja was capable of anything, and throughout her life she of course worked to serve others. She was a caretaker and nurses assistant at various nursing homes and worked at several restaurants. Sonja still found time to volunteer and did so at Helping Hands in Knoxville. She will always be remembered for being kind and generous.

Sonja passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023, surrounded by her family. She will be greatly missed by her children: Suzie (Frank) Whitehead, Bill South, Larry South, Asa South, and Krystle South; many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren; along with siblings: Dixie Donaldson, Harold Marshall, Charlie Marshall, Ron Marshall, Connie Hunt, Keith Marshall, Kenny Marshall, and Tom Marshall; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents: Asa and Ellen Marshall; and siblings: Billy Bob Marshall, Asa Marshall, Richard Marshall, and Russell Marshall.
