This is the story of Samuel David Voss. Young Sam began following his father around the farm at age five, which sparked his love of land and livestock. He lived his entire life on that same farm north of Chariton, forming a partnership with his brother Ron for the last 50 years. Together they were stewards of the land and took great pride in their cattle. A 2019 induction into the Cattleman Hall of Fame recognized a lifetime of work.

Anyone that knew Sam could attest to his uncanny ability to converse with friends and strangers alike. If farming was his true love, talking was a close second. Many late afternoons, Sam could be seen in the driveway, wearing his trademark overalls, talking with family and neighbors. Most recently Sam would say, “I don't understand this texting. If you want to talk to someone, you should call them.”

Sam had a lot of fun in life. Riding snowmobiles and square dancing were a couple of his favorites. In his younger days, Sam learned to fly a plane and acquired a pilot's license. However, one rough landing quickly put an end to that. For a brief period he was produce manager at the Oskaloosa Hy-Vee and enjoyed his time working there.

Finally, all of these aspects of Sam's life do not compare to his love of family. He married his wife Theresa Brentnall in 1979. Their courtship was short, but their love has been strong for the last 42 years. They welcomed their son T.J. in 1983, his wife Jennifer in 2008, and two grandchildren Greta (11) and Calvin (9). He was the youngest of four children: Donna Ann, Janice and Ron. Other survivors include their spouses Roger, Gary and Deb and his niece and nephews: Becky, Sean, Ronnie and Ryan. He is preceded in death by his parents Byron and Molly, his niece Stacy Hancock, and in-laws Woody and Gladys Brentnall. Sam’s time on earth ended February 4th, 2022. He lived his life to the fullest for 68 years and one day.
