Roy Edward Cochran Jr.

Roy Cochran Jr., of Chariton, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the age of 93. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Chariton. Memorial contributions are requested to the American Legion. Roy Edward Cochran Jr. was born April 12, 1923 in Reinbeck, Iowa to Roy Edward Sr. and Bertie Anna Cochran. Roy was one of nine children born to the couple. He grew up in Arkansas. After his schooling, Roy was enlisted in the United States Army. Roy fought as a soldier during World War II and experienced firsthand two of the most well-known battles of the war, D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded numerous combat decorations including the Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal, Combat Infantry Badge, ETO Ribbon and four campaign stars. Roy received the Purple Heart when he was injured during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Staff Sergeant when he was discharged in October of 1945. Roy was married to Evelyn Cavanaugh on August 4, 1945. The couple moved to Chariton in 1952 to farm. Together they raised eight children: Roberta, Ronald, Mary, Julie, Paul, Eileen, Mike, and Christine. In addition to farming for twenty-three years, Roy worked as a mail carrier for the Chariton Post Office for sixteen years. He retired in 1990. Roy was also a member of the American Legion. Roy and Evelyn attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. Roy loved being at home on the farm. He spent a lot of time outdoors, mowing and gardening. Roy kept an impressive garden every year until the age of 89. Every summer and fall he would gather produce from his garden and apples from his orchard to give to friends and neighbors. Roy loved having his family get together at the farm. He enjoyed big family meals and games of croquet with his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by so many. Roy is survived by his children: Roberta & Jerry Cochran-Zavitz, Mary Cochran, Julie & Curt Blanchard, Paul Cochran, Eileen McVey, Mike Cochran, and Christine & Robert Seto; 3 grandchildren: Noah, Austin, and Justin; and 4 great grandchildren: Cash, Thalia, Odin, and Sequoia. Also surviving are his siblings: LaVaughn Zwanziger, Jack Cochran, Gerald Cochran, Jerry Cochran, and Darlene Barker. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Cochran; son, Ronald Cochran; and siblings: Lucille Fuller, Russell Cochran, and Ruby Fuller.
