Raleigh Gilbert “Gib” Dean, age 88, of rural Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 16, 2019.
Gib was born on June 29, 1931, in Oberlin, Kansas, the son of Raleigh and Olive Dean. He attended Decatur Community High School and graduated with the Class of 1950.
Gib was united in marriage to Elizabeth Marie Johnson in 1951. They were blessed with six children, Janet, Richard, Beverly, David, Maggie, and Lowell. Gib entered the United States Army in 1955 during the Korean War. He was a mechanic and driver and was proud to serve his country.
After his service, Gib was employed at the V.A. and worked in the Boiler Plant and in Maintenance. Gib farmed all his life. He had a passion for restoring vintage cars/vehicles. He loved the local parades and showing his vintage cars. He was a member of the Iowa Hawkeye Chapter of the Studebaker Club. Gib was also a great artist. He especially loved spending time with his family.
Gib’s wishes were to be cremated. A private family burial will take place at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel on a later date.
Those left to cherish Gib’s memory include his wife, Elizabeth Dean of rural Knoxville; children, Janet Heporth of Elizabeth City, NC; Richard (Linda) Dean of Marion; Beverly Ann (Christopher) McLinden of Adel; David (Kitty) Dean of Tipp City, OH; Maggie (Gary) Stoller of Tonopah, AZ; and Lowell (Cheryl) Dean of rural Knoxville; and seven grandchildren.
Gib is preceded in death by his parents, Raleigh and Olive Dean; and two sisters, Fran Winder and Jackie Garver.
