Norma Ilene Hoch was born near Newbern, IA in Lucas County on December 15, 1929, to Wayne and Lula (Nickelson) Stierwalt in the home of her grandparents, John and Maggie Stierwalt. In 1931, she was joined by a brother, Berns. Her early years were spent on farms in Lucas and Marion counties, while she attended nearby country schools. In 1941, the family moved from Chariton, IA to Kersey, CO, but moved back to Iowa two months later. In the fall of 1944, the family again moved to Colorado, where Norma graduated from Longmont High School in 1948. Later that year, they moved back to Iowa and settled on a farm two miles south of Newbern. On June 6, 1951, Norma married Claude Hoch in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Bauer, IA. They made their home in Melcher, IA until 1956, when they moved to their farm north of Chariton, IA. There, they raised four children - Douglas, Stephen, Dwight, and Sheila. In 1976, they moved to Chariton. Norma held several jobs in Chariton, including secretary for the Lucas County Home Health Care, news director for radio station KYRS, and director of the Lucas County Senior Citizens Congregate Meals. Norma retired in 1992. Norma was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton where she was active in the Parish Outreach and the women's group, helping to prepare and serve countless funeral dinners. Norma loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, playing cards with friends, and fishing with her husband, and friends, Bud and Beverly Garner. Norma passed away peacefully at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, IA on July 28, 2020. She is survived by children: Douglas (Martha) Hoch of Corydon, Stephen (Cynthia) Hoch of Centerville, Dwight (Connie) Hoch of Wichita, KS, and Sheila Hoch of Chariton. She is also survived by grandchildren: Matt (Stacey) Bryant, Jennifer (Brian) Spielbauer, Tiffany (Andrew) Quillin, Angela (David) Shinn, Stacey (Jason) Maddy, Laurie (Mitch) Nielsen, Nicholas (Samantha) Hoch, Danielle (Todd) Zeller, Jacob (Justine) Hoch, Marissa Hols (Jeremy Miller), and Gil Hols; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Stierwalt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Flavian and Josephine Hoch; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Lula; husband, Claude; and brother, Berns. Norma will forever be remembered by all who knew her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a beautiful lady with a big heart who would always share a hug, a kiss, or a smile when needed. God is surely embracing her today, saying "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
