Chariton

A Celebration of Life gathering for Naomi Chandler, 85, of Chariton will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2023, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Memorials may be made to the Chariton or Lucas Fire Departments in care of Pierschbacher Funeral Home.

Naomi Louise (Cotten) Chandler was born on July 31, 1937, in rural Redfield, Iowa to Dudley and Lucy (Ellis) Cotten. She was raised in rural Redfield and rural Earlham. She spent many hours growing up in the timber along the Raccoon River. Naomi graduated with the class of 1954. She met Jay G. Chandler at a wedding and the two were united in marriage on August 20, 1956. They were blessed with four children: Marcia, Greg, Patty, and Raymond.

Naomi was a homemaker and farm wife. She loved being home for her children, and she was a wonderful cook. If there was family there, she always asked them to stay for lunch. It was your own fault if you went hungry when visiting the Chandler’s.

Along with being a homemaker, Naomi was a member of the Norwood Ladies Aid. Over the years, Naomi refinished furniture and sewed clothing for the family. She planted large gardens and canned a large amount of produce. Through the years, she made many bed blankets and extended that to making quilts. She was very proud of finishing her quilts on her quilting machine. Her family was her pride and joy. Her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews were loved so much by her.

Naomi will be dearly missed by her children: Marcia (Randy) Heimdal of Lucas, Greg (Lisa) Chandler of Chariton, and Patty (Gene) Snyder of Truro; 10 grandchildren: Tricia (David) Shuffty of Lucas, Jason (Elizabeth) Heimdal of Van Meter, Joel (Nicole) Chandler of Chariton, Brandon (Amanda) Chandler of Johnston, Amanda (Ryan) Hegg of Springfield, MO, Tim (Jess) Snyder of Eugene, OR, Curt (Andrea) Snyder of Ramstein, Germany, Jeff Snyder of Waukee, Tia Snyder of Cottage Grove, WI, and Tara Snyder of Urbandale; 14 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane (Ted) Coppock; sisters-in-law: Donna Cotten, Bernadine Cotten, Norma Hubbard, Donna Chandler, JoAnn (Ron) Parker, Vera Black, and Jennie Shanks; as well as nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dudley and Lucy; husband, Jay; son, Raymond (Lisa); and siblings: Marvine (Delbert) Holloway, Phyllis (Philip) Messamer, Betty Cotten, George Cotten, Chuck Cotten, Dean Cotten; and brother-in-law, Harold Hubbard.
