Mikhail Petrovich Shmaydiy

Services for Mikhail Shmaydiy, 74 of Knoxville, will be Monday, July 5, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends on Monday, from 11:00 to 11:30 at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Columbia Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated later.

Mikhail Shmaydiy was born on September 4, 1946 in Dolina, Ukraine. He grew up in Dolina and while in high school he met the love of his life Vera Khitra. They were married in 1968 in Ternopil, Ukraine. To this union they were blessed with Mikhail and Anna.

Mikhail attended Ternopil Medical School, graduating in 1970. He practiced medicine for 20 years, specializing in pediatrics. In May of 1992, the family moved to Seattle, Washington, where they lived for 10 years. They then moved to southern Iowa in 2002. After arriving in Iowa, Mikhail served as a pastor of a Slavic Christian church in Chariton for 10 years.

Mikhail was an incredibly kindhearted and talented man who loved helping his family and anyone in need. He was constantly studying God’s Word and striving to live a worthy life. He could fix anything and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, literature, and book restoration. He loved to make artwork out of driftwood. His family was always important to him and his grandchildren a highlight in his life.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Vera Shmaydiy; daughter, Anna Shkiryak; son-in-law, Peter Shkiryak; daughter-in-law, Nataliya Shmaydiy; and grandchildren: Michael Shkiryak, David Shkiryak, Daniel Shkiryak, Paul Shkiryak, Nick Shkiryak, Kristina Shkiryak, Sofia Shkiryak, Andrew Shkiryak, Steven Shkiryak, Matthew Shkiryak, Michael Shmaydiy, Daniel Shmaydiy, Mark Shmaydiy, Tanya Shmaydiy, Elijah Shmaydiy, Anna Shmaydiy and Andrew Shmaydiy. Mikhail was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mikhail Shmaydiy; and grandson, Timothy Shmaydiy.
