Michael James Lane, age 85, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at the Knoxville Hospital.
Mike was born on March 5, 1937, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Margretta (Ryan) Lane. Mike grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1955. He then attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated with the class of 1959. Mike then went to the University of Iowa Law School and graduated in 1962.
Mike was united in marriage to Mary Kramer on June 8, 1963, in Waterloo, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Katie, Peggy, and Dan. Mike and Mary enjoyed 59 years of marriage before his passing on December 11, 2022.
Mike and Mary moved to Knoxville in 1963, where he was employed at the Army Corp. of Engineers. Mike then joined the Johnson, Jordan, and Lane Law Firm.
Mike worked as an attorney for 56 years. He was also the City Attorney of Knoxville for 20 years.
Mike enjoyed bike riding, taking walks, reading a good book, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a respected member of the community and deeply loved by his family and friends.
Those left to cherish Mike’s memory include his wife of 59 years, Mary Lane, daughters, Katie Spriggs (Krestin), and Peggy Lane Flanagan; son, Dan Lane (Michelle), brother, Tim Lane and his daughter, Carrie; and sister, Patricia Cain (Jim). Mike is also survived by grandchildren, Aaron Davis, John Davis, Matt Davis, Molly Coon (Craig), Abby Davis Marshall, Nick Flanagan, Maggie Flanagan, Ellie Lane (Katie), and Ryan Lane; also, one great-grandson, Owen.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Margretta Lane; and two sisters, Sue Gutknecht and her husband Art, and Betty Schrock.
Visitation for Mike will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with Mike’s family present. A funeral mass will take place at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Friday, December 16, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. Following mass, a luncheon will be held at the church. A private family burial will be held at Graceland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Mike’s memory to the Knoxville Hospital Don & Margaret Long Infusion Center or the Knoxville Public Library.
