In 1969, a 20 year old mechanical drafting student at Centerville Junior College was called to serve in the Vietnam War. Private First-Class, Michael L Schneider, defended the country he loved so much from September to October of 1970. It was at that time he sustained eleven gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. He was treated in a MASH unit, airlifted to a hospital in Japan, then transferred to Fort Riley in Kansas. It was there that he underwent a long, painful recovery and was told he might never walk again. Because of his bravery and sacrifice for his country, Michael was honorably discharged and awarded a Purple Heart. Michael was born on May 30, 1949 in Pleasantville, Iowa to Walter and Louise Schneider. He was raised on a farm in Bauer, Iowa, where summers were spent bailing hay, milking cows, and cleaning hog houses before jumping into the pond to cool off. It was from these childhood experiences that Michael realized his passion for farming and appreciation of a nice, cold beer after hard day's work. Michael attended grade school at St. Joseph's of Bauer and graduated from Melcher Dallas High School in the class of 1967 before moving on to college then Vietnam. After his long physical rehabilitation, Michael worked for Economy Forms as a mechanical draftsman for 10 years. He then purchased Water Away Basement Waterproofing, which he successfully ran for over 20 years, despite his permanent disability. In 1992, he bought a farm just west of Winterset, Iowa, where he carried on his love of farming, hunting, and hard work well into his retirement. In April of 2020, Michael was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. He spent his final days surrounded by close friends and family before passing peacefully on May 29, 2020. Michael is preceded in death by his parents, brother Nicholas Schneider, and niece Sarah Conkel. He is survived by three brothers Ted (Rita) Schneider of Wever, IA, Dan (Leanne) Schneider of Marshalltown, and Chris (Molly) Schneider of Indianola; sister-in-law, Betsy Schneider; ten nieces and nephews; fifteen great nieces and nephews; and two great- great nephews.
