Melford Eugene Slack was born June 13, 1933 in Williamson, Iowa to Francis and Margaret (Lang) Slack. He attended the Williamson School through the eighth grade. And as Mick always said the best thing that ever happened to him was meeting Arlene Neer. They were married May 21, 1951 and were blessed with five children: Dennis, Pam, Dee, Jewel, and Shelly. Mick worked as the service manager for the Ford dealership in Chariton; and in 1973 he started his own garage and repair shop, which he continued until retiring in 2008. Mick loved to work in his yard and garden. His family describes him as hard working, honest, and a family man. He loved to take the kids for a ride in the convertible and going to all the grandchildren's events. Every day after lunch he'd give Arlene a kiss before going back to work. Mick passed away January 30, 2015 at the Legacy Lodge Hospice in Chariton. He was preceded in death by his parents: Francis and Margaret Slack; his wife, Arlene Slack in 2008; siblings: Bill Slack, Dwayne Slack, David Slack, Joe Slack, and Isabelle Cole; and a grandson: Christopher Stone. Surviving are his children: Dennis (Marcie) Slack of Mediapolis, Pam (Randy) Trenary of Cedar Rapids, Dee (Scott) McDonald of Chariton, Jewel (Jeff) Thorne of Chariton, and Shelly Williams of Chariton; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 2 more expected soon; and a brother, Francis "Sonny" Slack of Des Moines. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Cemetery Details Chariton Cemetery HWY 14 and HWY 34
