Marvin Laverne “Dink” Anderson was born August 26, 1946, in Chariton, Iowa to Marvin and Roena Redlingshafer Anderson. He grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1964. After high school he served in the United States Navy from 1964 until 1968. Upon returning home he worked for Scooter Darrah for a couple of years then began a 41-year career at Hy-Vee. He began working at the Distribution Center and then drove a truck. Dink retired from Hy-Vee in December of 2009.
While attending a New Year’s Eve party at the Blue Grass in 1975, he met Kathy Butelli. They fell in love and were married June 17, 1978. Dink and Kathy were blessed with two daughters: Karrie and Kelsie. His wife and girls have always been his greatest joy in life, and he was especially blessed with his two granddaughters: Kenley and Brentli, whom he spoiled greatly.
When Karrie and Kelsie were young Dink and Kathy were on a bowling league on Sunday nights, if the girls went with them, Dink would always buy them Iowa Lottery pull tabs to keep them busy or bring them home for the girls (they sold them at the bowling alley). Dink was a gambler, he loved betting on sports games (before it was legal) and Kelsie got her love of gambling from him. Kelsie and Dink would spend their hour lunch breaks and holidays, doing scratch tickets and talking about how they would spend the winnings if they ever hit it big.
In his younger days, he coached little league, and then coached Karrie’s softball team for many years. After he retired, he spent almost every Saturday for years at wrestling tournaments with Al and Sara Houchins following their two boys James and Dallas throughout High School and then all through their college days at Grand view. He loved every minute of it, those boys were so special to him.
Dink loved all sports and always had a favorite team no matter who was playing, but he was a huge Hawkeye, St. Louis Cardinal, and Kansas City Chief fan. He also enjoyed deer and duck hunting and loved playing golf. He enjoyed all these things, but more importantly, he loved doing them with his friends. He didn’t necessarily care if they got a duck, but he did not want to miss breakfast in the blind or cracking open a beer. The same went for yearly fishing trips to Rathbun and Canada with the guys, it was definitely not about the fishing, but instead the great friendships and memories. Dink belonged to the Lakeview Country Club in Chariton for more than 30 years and never missed a tournament or the Friday Brew Crew golf outings.
Dink passed away at home November 26, 2021. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Kathy; daughters: Karrie Anderson and Kelsie (Cory) Dommer; his loved granddaughters: Kenley and Brentli; a sister, Cheryl Barker; sister-in-law, Vicki (Dennis) Swallow; nephew, Chris (Kim) Feehan; niece, Kristin (Gary) Parker and many nieces and nephews; good friends: Diane Hoffman and Rick McCarty; along with many other friends and relatives.
Preceding him in death were his parents: Marvin and Roena Anderson; sister, Kay Feehan; in-laws: Victor and Ann Butelli; and special sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Steve Martin.
