Marvin Long Brooks was born February 16, 1935, in Marion County, Iowa, to J. Ray and Clarice (Long) Brooks. He died peacefully on August 3, 2023, at Westridge Care Center in Knoxville, Iowa. Friends and family are invited to attend visitation services for Marvin on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church, located at 313 E. Montgomery St., Knoxville, IA 50138. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at the same location. A luncheon will be served immediately following services at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Knoxville First United Methodist Church or in care of the family to be designated at a later date.

Marvin was united in marriage to Joyce Brooks on October 23, 1960, at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Pleasantville, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army, mostly at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, as a chaplain’s assistant. Marvin spent almost 30 years in machining and assembling components of large newspaper presses and was sent to U.S. cities and around the world. He was dedicated to working long hours, if needed; however, keeping Sundays free for worshipping God. Marvin was a participant of Bible study groups at work as well as through his church. While physically able, he enjoyed working on church projects and helping friends and neighbors.

In all the places he and Joyce lived, he always had a vegetable garden and usually planted fruit trees and shared the produce with family and friends. In the cold months Marvin made wood projects. The items were always sanded to the perfect smoothness he required. He also enjoyed photography of family weddings and landscapes.

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Joyce; his sister, Barbara Petersen; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Clarice, and siblings, Frances Jordan, James Brooks, Benny Brooks, Helen Stevenson, and Bob Brooks.
