His parents made sure to raise the kids with a deep faith in God. He attended Catholic School at Bauer until the 8th grade. He worked along side his family raising turkeys and the family also had a fencing business, putting in 100's of miles of fence all over southern Iowa. Marty also did a lot of hay work for neighbors and other farm work as well. He worked several years at the sawmill in Pleasantville and also in construction. Marty was very family oriented and loved spending time with Betty, whom he had been with for 16 years, but had been friends for over 40 years. They loved to go fishing and camping together. Marty also enjoyed cooking and could make a mean fried chicken with fried potatoes, and topped it off with a good banana cream pie.
