Mark “Charlie” Van Houwelingen, age 77, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Charlie was born on April 25, 1943 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Marinus and Ida (Dylhoff) Van Houwelingen. He grew up just outside of Pella and attended Pella High School. Following school, he joined the United States Marines Corp. and served for 6 months before being medically discharged due to knee problems.
Charlie was united in marriage to Marijo Bingley and to this union two children were born, Doug and Teri. Charlie later married Nancy (Jarman) Rowley on April 9, 1983. They were blessed with 37 years of marriage before his passing.
Charlie worked at Red Rock Dam, Iowa Power & Light, and as a car salesman before becoming employed at VerMeer in Pella. He worked there for over 30 years until his retirement. After retirement, Charlie worked at Weiler Mfg., mowing for several years.
Charlie was a loyal sprint car fan and a longtime member of New Covenant Church in Knoxville. He loved life and had a great sense of humor. Charlie was very opinionated and wasn’t afraid to let people know his opinion. He was always there to help anyone in need. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by them all.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Nancy Van Houwelingen; children, Doug Van Houwelingen (Kathy) of Leon, IA, Teri Carson (Brian) of Grand River, IA; step-children, Lisa Modlin (Steve) of Altoona, IA, and Dennis Rowley (Kim) of Melcher-Dallas, IA. He is also survived by his brother, Alvin Van Houwelingen of California; sister, Jessie De Jong of Pella, IA; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Marius and Ida Van Houwelingen; brother, Jim Van Houwelingen; and one grandson, Kenny McKay.
Charlie’s wishes were to be cremated. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville. A luncheon will also be provided during visitation. Charlie’s family will be present to greet friends and relatives. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 P.M at the funeral home. Private burial services will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
