Marguerite, a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, was born on December 22, 1921, in San Diego, California, where she lived until she met and married the U.S. Navy’s Vernon R. White, of Williamson, Iowa. Marguerite and Vernon lived in various places across America during Vernon’s service in the Navy, including during World War II and the Korean Conflict. They raised three daughters, Marguerite (Maggie) Eileen, Carolyn Marie, and Sharon Diane and had 8 grandchildren.
The family settled in Chariton after Vernon retired from the Navy in 1957, and Marguerite took a nurses’ aid position at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Knoxville where she eventually retired. She was also an Order of the Eastern Star member.
Marguerite will be dearly missed by her daughter, Carolyn Stanley of Newton; 4 grandchildren: Barton Barnhart, Casey Barnhart, Angela Morse, and Maggie Wilson, 14 great grandchildren; and at least a couple dozen great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; father and mother, Emmanuel and Jenny Duran; daughter, Maggie (and her husband and two children); daughter, Sharon; and four grandchildren.
