Margaret Gene Mart was born on September 3, 1934 to Gerald and Freeda (Verwers) Mart. Margaret attended school in the Melcher-Dallas Community School District and graduated from the Dallas High School in 1952 as the Senior Class President. Margaret married Paul Umble Jr. on September 3, 1952. During the first fifteen years of their marriage, they were blessed with four daughters: Kathryn (Kathy), Connie, Rachael (Shelly), and Paula. When the girls became older, Margaret started working outside of the home. She was a Nursing Assistant at Westridge Manor in Knoxville, Iowa and from there her interest grew in becoming a nurse. In the fall of 1971, Margaret and Kathy started Nursing School at DMACC in Ankeny, Iowa. In the fall of 1972, they both walked across the stage of Veterans Auditorium with a LPN degree. Margaret started her LPN career at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Knoxville, Iowa and retired from nursing while working at Pleasant Care Manor in Pleasantville, Iowa. In February 2010, Margaret was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and Multiple Myeloma. After Paul's passing on June 27, 2012, Margaret moved from their small acreage four miles north of Knoxville, to Park Lane Assisted Living in Knoxville. As her health deteriorated, it was determined in her best interest to move her to The Cottages - Friesland (Assisted Living) to be closer to the Pella Dialysis Unit. In February 2018, she was moved to The Cottages - Gelderland (Long Term Care). After eight years of dialysis, Margaret passed away on May 2, 2018 at the age of 83 years. Margaret is survived by her children: Kathy (Jim) Brees of Knoxville, Connie (Richard) Homan of Oskaloosa, Rachael (Mike) Morse of Knoxville, and Paula Collins of Hill City, South Dakota; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Linda (John) Johnson; brothers: Lloyd Mart, Gordon Mart, Mike Mart, Rick Mart, and Gary Mart; and sister-in-law, Patsy Mart.
