Lucienne “Luci” Jeanne (Toison) Thompson, age 97, formerly of Des Moines, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Luci was born in Leuven, Belgium, on August 7, 1923, to Jean Cecile and Jeanne (Breysem) Toison. Luci was fluent in 7 languages, excelled at school and enjoyed learning from her father. They were married on May 24, 1945, in Leuven, Belgium.
Luci joined her husband in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1946. She was a homemaker and worked for the Post Office, Younkers and JC Penny downtown, but her longest career was banquet waitressing. She really enjoyed this work and served many important visitors to Des Moines, as well as serving at the Governor’s Mansion, finally retiring at the age of 80.
Luci loved spending time in her yard and planting flowers. She also enjoyed shopping, watching golf, playing and watching tennis.
Luci is survived by her children, Linda Burke of Knoxville, Carolyn (Jim) Staker of Oskaloosa, Terry (Cheryl) Thompson of Waco, Tx, and Mark (Laura) Thompson of Pleasant Hill; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 sisters, 3 brothers, and 3 grandchildren.
Luci loved Florida and the Atlantic Ocean, and this will be her final resting place. A private seaside memorial for family will be held at a later date.
