Lorenz Karl “Larry” Westphal, Jr., age 78, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away at his residence on Tuesday evening, May 17, 2022.
A Celebration of Life with burial at Graceland Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Lorenz was born on September 2, 1943, in Sacramento, California to Lorenz Karl and Marcella Ann (DernKamper) Westphal. Lorenz grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines Tech High School, Class of 1961.
Following high school, Lorenz joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country from 1961 to 1965.
During his time in the services, stationed in Kansas, Lorenz was united in marriage to Janice Ann Russell on December 28, 1963, at Forbes Field Airbase in Topeka, Kansas. Lorenz and Janice were blessed with one son, Brian.
Following Larry’s military service, he worked with Meredith Printing in Des Moines for 28 years. After retirement he did maintenance at Arrowhead Trailor Park in Arizona for several years. Larry and Janice shared many years in Arizona. He enjoyed dancing with Janice, woodworking, watching sports, and being with his family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years Janice Westphal of Knoxville; their son Brian Westphal and Rhonda Collins of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Mitchell Westphal, Jacob Giley, Jordan Westphal, Marci Westphal, and Cassi Westphal; and one great-grandchild River. Larry is also survived by his sister Vernona “Noni” McClanahan.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Lorenz and Marcella Westphal.
