Liela Grace Mitchell

Liela Grace (Stout) Mitchell was born on January 24, 1931 to Homer and Thelma (Hetherington) Stout in Dallas, Iowa. She was a survivor of the 1930's polio epidemic. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1949. On July 24, 1949, Liela Grace was married to Bernard James Mitchell in Chariton, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Kathy, Bernard James II, Brent, Jill, and Melinda. Liela and Bernard raised their family mainly in the Chariton area. They were members of the First United Methodist Church. Liela always enjoyed helping to serve meals at the church. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her homemade macaroni and cheese. She also made homemade mints for special events. Liela celebrated her loved ones birthdays by making special meals and their favorite desserts. Sewing was a passion of Liela's. She would sew everything from wedding dresses, baptismal outfits, denim teddy bears, and Halloween costumes, to re-upholstering sofas. She was an avid reader and a proud subscriber to Better Homes and Gardens Magazine for over fifty years! Liela loved flowers, especially pink roses. She worked for a time at both Chariton Floral and House of Flowers. She was also a proud member of the School Mates Club of Chariton. Liela passed away on August 3, 2015 at the Circle of Life Hospice-Legacy Lodge in Chariton at the age of 84. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Bernard Mitchell of Chariton; children: Kathy Brill of Ottumwa, B. James Mitchell II of Cedar Rapids, Brent Mitchell (Janet) of Fort Dodge, Jill Cook (Jeff) of Gladstone, MO, and Melinda Gearhart (Kevin) of Marion; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Stierwalt of Chariton, Kay Lande (Fred) of Ames, and Janet Lemmer (Greg) of Lexington, VA; brothers-in-law, Frank Mitchell of Chariton and Richard Mitchell (Mary Lou) of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Thelma (Hetherington) Stout; granddaughter, Shanda Suzanne Brill; and several brothers and sisters-in-law. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Chariton Cemetery at a later date.
