Funeral services for Leonard Payton, 96, will be Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas. Family will receive friends on Friday at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Monroe Cemetery in Monroe, Iowa. Memorials are requested to the Melcher-Dallas Rescue Unit, the Local Salvation Army, or the Wounded Warriors Project. Leonard Dean Payton was born May 27, 1920 in Poole, Nebraska to Harry and Jessie Payton. Leonard passed away Monday, May 1, 2017 at the West Ridge Nursing Center in Knoxville at the age of 96 years 11 months and 5 days. On September 15, 1940, Leonard married Beulah Irene Thomasson. They were blessed with three children: Richard, Norma, and Norman. They made their home in Monroe until moving to Melcher-Dallas in 1956. Leonard was a dairy farmer for many years. He loved working outside with the animals, the crops, and nature. In his retirement years his garden became legendary; always full of different vegetables tended to perfectly. Leonard liked to give away his produce; he also enjoyed canning and cooking the fruits and vegetables he grew. His pies were well known, and one of the favorites was his cherry pie. Another hobby he took up was woodworking. He was a skilled craftsman making cabinets and furniture for all his family. All of the grandchildren have something that he crafted. He liked to read National Geographic, Reader's Digest, and the Handyman Magazine and while at Homestead in Knoxville he found that he looked forward to Bingo. His friends and neighbors will remember him as a generous, kind, hard-working individual who would do anything to help a friend or family member. Surviving is his daughter, Norma Harrell of Kingman, AZ; brother, Donald (Betty) Payton of Childress, TX; grandchildren: Byron Payton, Tammy (Brian) Gullion, Teresa Wells, Tina (Bob) Foltz, Ricky Payton, and Mike Harrell; 9 great grandchildren; and 7 great great grandchildren. Along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding Leonard in death was his wife, Beulah Payton; sons: Richard and Norman; grandson, Doug Bates; great great granddaughter, Korissa Wells; and siblings: George, Roy, Dean, Homer, Loretta Frazier, and Blanche Payton.
