Leland Sims

Leland Sims Chariton, Iowa Leland Sims was born on July 20, 1925 in Russell, Iowa the only child of Golda R. Baker and Richard Sims. He passed away at his home in Chariton on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the age of 81 years. Leland attended Russell schools until he was drafted to the Army during World War II. He served in Europe until he was honorably discharged in 1945. During a two weeks leave he married Helen Elliott on October 7, 1944. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Chariton and worked at J.C. Penney's. He also co-owned and operated a standard station with Harold Willis before going to work at Chariton Wholesale Grocery. He survived a near fatal truck wreck in 1972, that left him hospitalized for three months. He retired from Hy-Vee in 1990 after 41 years. Leland is survived by his wife, Helen; children: Vickey (Chris) Kish of Chariton, Teresa Fox of Clive, and Lonnie (Ruth) Sims of Chariton; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren. His wish was to be cremated. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. No services are planned.
