Services for Lee Harrington, 93, of Chariton, will be Wednesday, June 27th at 2:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Lucas County Veteran's Park or to Lee's family. Lee Eugene Harrington was born to Lester Lee and Olive Sandy Harrington on March 12, 1925 at Harvey, Iowa. They moved to Lucas in 1942 and graduated from Lucas High School in the spring of 1943. He was engaged in farming with his father until he was drafted into the Infantry on February 23, 1944. He served in the Armed Forces for 23 months receiving an Honorable Discharge on January 31, 1946. He served his combat duty in Italy where he received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Metal, two Bronze Stars, and a Presidential Unit Citation. Lee attended Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Iowa and Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa, until his appointment as a rural mail carrier at Lucas, Iowa on November 1, 1947 and was later transferred to the Chariton office. He retired from this job on January 4, 1984, having carried mail for 36 years and two months. Many have stated that they could set their clocks by his timely routes. Lee accepted Christ as his Savior on January 22, 1950 and joined the Church of the Nazarene and has been serving the Lord since that time. He has served in many capacities: Church Board Trustee for 34 years and Sunday School Superintendent for 19 ½ years. Lee was Chaplain for the Iowa Rural Letter Carriers Association for 8 years, and an officer on the State Board for the Rural Letter Carrier Association for 3 years. Lee was married to Olive Mae McDonald on January 8, 1948. She passed away on March 22, 1949. On July 28, 1953, Lee was united in marriage with Bethel Jane Fischer. Two children were adopted: Lori Jean and Mark Alan. These children brought much happiness to Lee and Bethel along with the grandchildren. Lee loved to garden and had a garden every year for over 60 years. Lee passed away June 22, 2018 at the age of 93 years. His wife, Bethel Harrington; and brother, Bob (Charlene) Harrington preceded him in death. Lee is survived by his daughter, Lori (Karl) Stone; son, Mark (Wilene) Harrington; 2 grandchildren: Jerid and Aimee Delpierre; 1 great grandchild, Asher Delpierre; 3 step grandchildren: Karla (Don) Frisby, Shawn (Teri) Stone and Tanner (Jennifer) Stone; 5 step great grandchildren: Alexis Frisby, Mercedes Frisby, Lia Stone, Reagan Stone and Beckett Stone; siblings: Hubert (Doris) Harrington and Marie (Don) Rodgers; many nieces and nephews.
