Services for Larry Mikesell, 73, of Chariton, will be Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to the Legacy Lodge Hospice in Chariton or in care of his family to be designated at a later date. Larry Lynn Mikesell was born April 15, 1943 to Russell Roland and Evelyn Arwilda (LaFavre) Mikesell in Chariton, Iowa. Larry was raised in Chariton. As an only child, Larry was very close to all of his cousins. His family moved to Idaho in 1956, but returned to Chariton after two years. Larry graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1961. He continued his education at Drake University and Grandview College. Larry was united in marriage to Kandi Norton in 1962. The couple was blessed with two children, Melonie and Mark. The couple later divorced. Larry was united in marriage to Sue Krahenbuhl in 1996. Sue had three children: Jodi, Nic, and Heather. Larry happily accepted them into his life. Having been born a natural salesman, Larry made his living in sales. He owned and operated Mikesell's T.V. & Appliance store from 1969 until 1983. He was a salesman for KELR Radio. He worked KLBA AM sales until 1995 before it became an FM station in 1995 and he became General Manager. He held that position until KLBA sold to Joe Milledge in 2007 and the call letters changed to KIIC. He stayed employed selling advertising for KIIC until his death. Larry was the voice of Southern Iowa from the 80's until 2007, as both a morning show host and a sports broadcaster. Larry loved being around children and was a lover of all sports. He enjoyed coaching football and wrestling, as well as being a mentor. Larry enjoyed watching sports and followed both local high school sports and Iowa teams. He was a fan of archery, track, golf, baseball, snow skiing, water skiing, and boating. Larry also loved horseback riding, hunting, flying RC planes, woodworking, and riding ATVs and motorcycles. Larry was an adventurer who loved life, a challenge, and a good debate. He was never without a dog and loved animals in general. Above all else, Larry's parents and his wife were his best friends and he deeply loved his family. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Larry passed away on February 26, 2017 at the age of 73 at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Evelyn Mikesell. Larry is survived by his wife, Sue Mikesell; children: Melonie (Jim) Doyle of Hastings, IA, Mark (Tara) Mikesell of Lee's Summit, MO, Jodi (Al) Reiter of Parker, CO, Nic (Susan) Krahenbuhl of Ankeny, IA, and Heather (Dan) Comis of Vero Beach, FL; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; many special cousins that he thought of as brothers and sisters; and many friends.
