Lawrence D. Burkin, age 87, of Sun City, Arizona, passed away on May 14, 2022, at Surprise Health & Rehabilitation Center in Surprise, Arizona.
Larry’s wishes were to be cremated. A family gathering will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at the Winfield Funeral Home from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Burial will take place at Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel, Iowa on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 11:00 A.M.
Larry was born on November 18, 1934, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Vera (Lemon) Burkin. Following school, Larry joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country from 1954 to 1959. Following his time in the service he attended an art school in California before moving back to the Midwest.
Larry was united in marriage to Hazel Matney and they were blessed with four boys, David, Rick, Larry, and Roy Michael.
Larry later moved to Iowa where he met Diana (Van Den Baard) Meinders. They were married on July 4, 1975, and from that marriage he gained one stepson, David, and his daughter, Eve.
Larry worked many jobs throughout his life, including selling insurance, Rollscreen (Pella Corp.), electrician, and as a consultant for a molding plastic processing business. Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pella, Iowa, where he sang in the choir for many years. He also spent several years as a member of the Union Street Players.
Larry moved to Arizona in 2004, and enjoyed spending time with his companion, Shirley Blair. Larry enjoyed fishing, golfing, (especially with his nephew Brian Sowles, aka Monkey), attending horse races, and watching Westerns on TV.
Those left to cherish Larry’s memory include his companion, Shirley Blair of Sun City West, AZ; children, David (Cindy) Burkin of Lampe, MO, Rick (Jan) Burkin of Bonner Springs, KS, Larry (Phyllis Burkin) of Wheatland, MO, Roy Michael Burkin of Kansas City, KS, David (Terri) Van Den Baard of Ankeny, IA, and Eve (Nick) Munson of Polk City, IA. Larry is also survived by his grandchildren, Nick (Danielle) Burkin, Richard Burkin, Joseph Burkin, Kristen (Shane) Tabor, Lauren Van Den Baard, Seth Van Den Baard, Kaidyn Becvar, and Alexis Munson; great grandchildren, Aisla Burkin and Scarlett Tabor; also one sister, Joyce Stupp of Marshalltown, IA.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Leroy Winfield.
