As Peanut told it he was born in the barn east of Lacona. He was the eighth child of twelve born to Clem and Agnes. He had many stories of growing up with a large family some stories told about how hard it was, but mostly how great it was to grow up in such a large family. Peanut went to the Bauer School through the eighth grade and then went to Lacona graduating from Lacona High School in 1958. He was married to Sheryl Bumgarner on July 21, 1962, this union was blessed with three children: Lana, Lori, and Lynn. After graduation Peanut started working at Maytag in Newton where he worked for 30 years. He retired when he was 49 years old. A true outdoorsman, Peanut concentrated on hunting and fishing after retirement. He would get up early to enjoy the sunrise. He loved to bow-hunt and did so with great enthusiasm. In the spring he liked to go fishing at local farm ponds and spent countless hours hunting Turkeys. He harvested over 100 turkeys in his hunting career. If peanut had a tag for game in his pocket he was not home during daylight hours, any plans made would have to work around his hunting schedule. Peanut was passionate about hunting and fishing. He also really enjoyed people and looked forward to conversations with friends at morning coffee at the co-op. Many people will remember how he loved to tell a story. Peanut loved to garden and share his produce with all his friends and neighbors. While Peanut could grow great produce and could bring home wild game, he could not cook. He had said that his wife, Sheryl could make dirt taste good. And he would take his daughters with him on hunting and fishing trips so they could help cook. He had a big heart and enjoyed helping his neighbors and community. Peanut also served his country the National Guard for several years. He mowed and pushed snow for neighbors and had cleared snow for the city of Lacona for many years after he retired. He loved his family and enjoyed teasing them. He loved to sing with the kids doing the trains whistle in the song "I hear a train a comin". Family will also remember watching a Cubs game or driving by and seeing him sitting on the porch swing. Peanut will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children: Lana (Mark) Dittmer, Lori (Larry Petersma) Hoch, and Lynn (Cindy) Hoch; nine grandchildren: Bret, Danielle, Amanda, Nycole, Chad, Shane, Zachary, Miranda, and Makayla; 11 great grandchildren; and siblings: Clem Hoch, Gene Hoch, Marilyn (Vane) Orey, Carolyn Wallace, and Lou Nickelson; along with many relatives and friends.
