Kathy Miller

October 14, 1948 — September 6, 2020

Kathy Miller of Lacona, Iowa lost her fight with cancer on September 6, 2020 with the love of her life for 53 years, husband John, constantly by her side. Kathy Jane Spencer was born October 14, 1948 at home near Palmyra, Iowa to Gearold and Emma Spencer. She started school at Hartford and then moved to Southeast Warren and graduated in 1966. Kathy taught us all lessons on laughter, loyalty and most of all love. She was always quick with a story to make those around her smile which most often revolved around her former patients at the VA in Knoxville who she dedicated over 25 years serving until her retirement in 2008. Kathy was also extremely loyal to the Hawkeyes, Cubs, Drake Women's Basketball, chocolate, singing harmony and all things purple. But, her loyalty was most fierce towards the love for her family. Kathy married John in 1966 and together they had three boys: Darren, Doug (Melissa) and Dustin (Sara). Her sons gave her probably the biggest joy of her life, her eight grand children Ash (Avery) Brown, Alex Miller, Alex Brown, Nathan Miller, Cole Brown, Jade Miller, Liam Miller and Madeleine Miller who will terribly miss reading the Big Blue Book and grandma always having chocolate milk. It's difficult to encompass someone's whole life in a few short sentences but she wants you to know her family was important, but her love for Jesus was what guided her life where she served her community to show his love. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Gearold and Emma Spencer, her brothers John and Jesse and her granddaughter Libby. In addition to John, her children, and grandchildren she will be greatly missed by her siblings: Karen Tuinstra, James (Sandy) Spencer, Karmen (Bob) Zimmerman, Carol Spencer, Sally (Bill) Humphries, Beth Luse, Paul Spencer, and Rebecca (Rick) Halvorsen; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Sorry to all those families continuing to fight this awful disease and we promise our family will send you prayers everyday for the strength in your battles. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Jericho Hills Camp and Retreat Center at https://www.jerichohillscamp.org or to the University of Iowa Holden Cancer Center at https://donate.givetoiowa.org.
