Kathryn F. Grimes

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Kathryn Francis (Shrader) Grimes on February 18, 2023, in Newton, Iowa. Services will be held on March 18, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at the Bar None Cowboy Church in Newton, Iowa. Family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.

Kathy was born on September 1, 1939 in Lucas County, Iowa, to her loving mother Fern Cottingham.  She attended Chariton High School where she enjoyed being part of the band, and served as a baton twirler. Following her graduation she worked in medical business offices, and also for the Department of Transportation.  She loved helping others, and had a knack for customer service.  Kathy married Carol Prough in 1956, and they were blessed with three children.  Kathy enjoyed traveling to motocross tracks throughout the state to watch her sons race, and her kids looked forward to her fried chicken on Sunday night. 

She married Bill Grimes in Las Vegas, Nevada over thirty years ago, and they spent many years enjoying their kids and grandkids together. Kathy would often show up at her grandchildren's events with her big video recorder ready to record the fun. Kathy was a great gift giver, and her grandchildren always looked forward to opening her presents.  She loved to gamble, and hit her jackpot in 2007 when she won $50,000 from the Iowa Lottery.  She spent many of her later years camping with Bill.

Kathy will be deeply missed by her husband Bill; children Marla (Mike) McGinn of Iowa City, Kurt (Julie) Prough of Chariton and Linn (Lorrie) Prough of Indianola; Bill’s children Kathy (Douglas) Bogaards of (Pella); Suzanne Grimes of (Knoxville) and twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Fern Cottingham; stepson, William Michael Grimes; and grandson’s Brandon and Brett Prough.
