Joyce E. Heckman

Services for Joyce E. Heckman, 90, will be Friday, December 9, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. Family will receive friends prior to the service, from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the New Virginia Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in Joyce’s name to the Lacona Fire Department.

Joyce Elaine Peters was born at home, southwest of Ocheyedan, Iowa on August 10, 1932. She was one of three children born to John and Marie (Joens) Peters. After graduating from high school, Joyce continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

On May 28, 1954, Joyce was united in marriage to Delbert Heckman. They started their married life together on the farm. The couple was blessed with two children, Jerry and Jolene.

Joyce enjoyed many years teaching. She was a teacher at both I-35 and Indianola Community Schools. She also worked at Brenton Bank in Indianola. After retirement, Joyce and Delbert lived on Tablerock Lake near Branson, Missouri for ten years before moving to Lacona in 2001.

The Heckman family had a lot of very memorable vacations together. They loved camping and spending time out on the water on their boat. Joyce also loved time spent in her garden. She was a creative person who enjoyed painting and crafting. She made and sent countless homemade greeting cards.

Joyce spent her last couple of months back on the farm. She passed away December 4, 2022, surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed by her children, Jerry (Gerry) Heckman and Jolene Dittmer; her grandchildren: Lynne (Carlos) Vaz, Michelle (Mike) Fuller, Brian Dittmer, Leland Heckman, Matthew (Chelsey) Heckman, and Cody Heckman; 13 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Peters; husband of 66 years, Delbert Heckman; and brothers, Orville Peters and Lawrence Peters.
