Joseph Edward McGinn

Services for Joseph Edward McGinn, 95, of Chariton, Iowa will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. A luncheon will be held after the service at 1:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Memorials may be made to the church.

Family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa.

Joseph Edward McGinn was born on December 24, 1925, to Joseph and Frances (Molloy) McGinn in Galesburg, Illinois. Joe grew up in Weller, Iowa and attended school in Lovilia, Iowa until the 8th grade.

Joe married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Luttrell, on June 16, 1951. To this union, they were blessed with 6 children: Mike, Marcia, Pat, Julie, Geri, and Marti. The couple enjoyed doing everything together.

After getting married and leaving the farm, Joe and Margaret moved to Ottumwa where he started working for the railroad in 1951. Things started getting slow, so he quit and started working for Morrells. He hired back on the CB&Q Railroad in 1959 and retired in 1990.

Joe loved his wife dearly and although she was at the top of his list, playing cards ranked right up there. He was serious when he played cards too, always for money. He didn’t like playing with his grandkids, because he didn’t want to take their money. He greatly enjoyed a well-played round of Euchre, 4 Point Pitch, or Texas Hold’em. Joe was also an avid college football fan. The team he always cheered for was Notre Dame.

Life was never quite the same for Joe after Margaret’s passing. It is comforting knowing they are reunited in Heaven.

Joe will be dearly missed by his children: Mike (Marla) McGinn, Marcia (Jim) Thomas, Pat (Steve) Sallee, Julie (Kurt) Prough, Geri (Kevin) King, and Marti (Doug) Kent; 14 grandchildren: Matt (Liz Roman) McGinn, Maggie (James) Byrne, Brad (Jerusha) Thomas, Joey Thomas, Kari (Kenny) Mason, Katie (Joe) Shore, Aimee Keith, Andy Peterson, Riley (Emily) Prough, Kira Bartlemus, Shelby (Josh) Howell, Jenna (Brandt) Smith, Annie (Chase) Wickham, and Alie (Nick) Studer; 29 great grandchildren: Matthew, Marcio, Michael, Andrew, Nick, Jack, Gage, Madison, Sydnee, Taylor, Logan, Connor, Tanner, Abryana, Sophia, Addison, Kenadee, Ella, Olivia, Devon, Hawk, Ryker, Ivy, Levi, Mason, Reese, Cade, Ayla, and Emberlie; siblings: Johnny Molloy, Dee Rosenbaum, Jimmy (Cathy) McGinn, and Dick (Martha) McGinn.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Ann; siblings: Betty Ann Unger, Phyllis Henderson, and Barbara Chiafos; and grandchildren, Brett and Brandon Prough.
