John Francis Hughes, age 73, of Albia, Iowa died Friday, December 8, 2006 at Monroe Care Center in Albia. He was born January 2, 1933 in Monroe County, Iowa to John R. and Dora Elizabeth (Flahive) Hughes. He Married Velma DeGrofft on August 4, 1956 at St. Maryâ??s Church in Ottumwa, Iowa. John attended Albia Community Schools. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He was a truck driver for Hughes Trucking, Ideal Ready Mix, and Ben Shinn Trucking. He was a member of St. Maryâ??s Catholic Church in Albia, and also a member of the Knights of Columbus council #4167 of Albia. He is survived by his wife, Velma of Albia; Children, Helen (Matthew) Foster of Albia, John (Charlie) Hughes of Albia, and Jean (Alan) Foreman of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, C.J. Hughes and Jason Hughes of Albia, and Alex Birge of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by one sister, Mary (William) Kehl of Dubuque, Iowa; and one stepbrother, Sam (Doris) Mellick of Albia, Iowa. John was preceded in death by his Parents; one daughter, Julie Anne Hughes; and one brother, Daniel Hughes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 11, 2006 at St. Maryâ??s Catholic Church in Albia with Rev. William Walter, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will follow services at St. Maryâ??s Cemetery in Albia. Visitation will open after 11:00 A.M. on Sunday, December 10, 2006 at the Winfield Funeral Home in Albia. The family will be present from 6-8 P.M. Sunday evening. There will be a 4:00 P.M. Knights of Columbus Rosary, and also a Christian Wake Service held at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Casketbearers will be: John Hughes, C.J. Hughes, Jason Hughes, Matthew Foster, Alan Foreman, and Blaine Carter. Honorary Casketbearers will be: James Oâ??Brien, Alex Birge, Sam Mellick, and William Kehl. Memorials may go to Monroe Care Center or to Welcome Home Soldier Veteranâ??s Memorial
