John Gordon, Jr., age 90, of Harvey, Iowa, passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center, on Friday, June 10, 2022.
John’s wishes were to be cremated. His family will be present to greet friends from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville. A memorial service, with Masonic Rites, will begin at 10:30 A.M., led by Rev. Mike Miller. A private family burial will be held at Breckenridge Cemetery in rural Knoxville, Iowa.
John was born on August 11, 1931, in Pershing, Iowa, the son of John and Thelma Mae (Marshall) Gordon, Sr. John grew up in Pershing and attended country school near Pershing.
On April 20, 1950, in Lancaster, Missouri, John and Marian Marlene Vander Heiden were united in marriage for 60 years. They were blessed with four children Brenda Sue, Kathy, Kelly Eugene and Misty Dawn. Marian passed away on June 4, 2010.
Following school, John’s first jobs were in coalmines in Marion County, beginning his career with his father. Later he worked for Abel Construction in Des Moines, and a short time for Maytag. Most of John’s career was trucking. He owned and operated Gordon Trucking in Harvey. He was also a local Harvey Businessman. John retired in 1993. After retirement John operated Gordon Used Cars and he liked collecting and working on cars. He enjoyed boxing and racing and was a devoted Mason. John was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, Gavel 229, and a member of the Zi-Ga-Zig Shrine
Those left to cherish John’s memory include his children, Brenda “Sue” Ver Meer of Harvey, Kelly Eugene (Lori) Gordon of Tracy, and Misty Dawn Gordon of Harvey; seven grandchildren, Bret Pettyjohn, Tanya Bebee, Randy Gordon, Amanda Frye, Sarah McLaughlin, Shalee Van De Boe, and Rylee Van De Boe; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandson.
John is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Marian Marlene (Vander Heiden) Gordon; his parents John and Thelma Gordon, Sr.; and his daughter Kathy Gordon.
A memorial has been established in John’s memory to the Shriner’s Children Hospital.
