Joan Malecha Elmendorf

Joan Malecha Elmendorf of Chariton, formerly of Huntington Beach, CA, passed away on August 25, 2017 at the age of 85. Services are pending. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan's memory to the Lucas County Human Society. Joan Malecha Elmendorf was born to Marie A. and Edward J. Malecha in Oak Park, Illinois on January 19, 1932. She attended school in Cicero, Illinois and high school in Ontario, California. She received an A.A. degree at Chaffey College in Ontario, California. She worked as a psychiatric technician at Spadra State Hospital in Walnut, California. She taught second grade in 1953 and 1954 in Barstow, California. In 1954, Joan married Raymond Westlake. Two children were born to this marriage, David and Susan. Joan taught second grade in Ontario, then first and second grade in West Sacramento, California. Joan completed her B.A. degree at Stanislaus State College in Turlock, California. She taught first grade for two years in Manteca, California. She taught for ten years in Huntington Beach, California, seven of those years in first grade and three years as a fifth and sixth grade teacher and a sixth grade gifted teacher at Rancho View School. Joan married Bernard Platt Elmendorf in June of 1971. In 1974, she moved to an acreage south of Allerton, Iowa. She was a home health aide and physical therapy aide at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. She moved to Chariton in July of 1978. Joan and Bernard enjoyed many trips to Colorado and Estes Park. Joan enjoyed volunteering at the hospital, school, library, and quilting for World Relief. Joan was preceded in death by her son, David Westlake; parents, Edward and Marie Malecha; husband, Bernard Elmendorf; and ex-husband, Raymond Westlake. Surviving and mourning her death are her daughter, Susan Saige (Tom) of Riverside, CA; grandchildren: Stephen Ludden (Jamie), David Ludden (Becca), Evan Saige, Tiffani Lizarraga (Gumaro); and great grandchildren, Josiah (David) and Owen (Tiffani).
