Jerry Lee Nichol, age 82, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2020 at home, surrounded by his family.
Jerry was born January 30, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Walter and Gladys (Donaldson) Nichol. He grew up in a farming family in central Iowa. Jerry attended Collins High School in Collins, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1956. Jerry was always proud of his time playing baseball and was particularly proud of his 1956 Collins High School team that he was the catcher for. This little school with an enrollment of 62 beat the top ranked East Des Moines School 1-0 at sub-state, allowing them to go on to the state tournament.
Jerry was united in marriage to Deloris (Lori) Watt in 1956. They were blessed with one daughter, Pamela, born in 1957. Lori died of cancer in 1958. Jerry met Patty Bogue in 1959 and they married the same year. They were blessed with three children, Julie, Jennifer, and Andrew. Jerry and Patty just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last October.
Jerry and Patty lived a few years in Kansas City before returning to Iowa in 1974, where they settled and have lived in the rural Knoxville area ever since. Jerry was employed at 3M, Hormel, and Diamond Animal Health in the 46 years since returning to Iowa.
The thing Jerry did best all of his life was to work hard and make whatever sacrifice necessary to take care of his family. He could fix or build anything, although not always the fastest at doing so. He had his own side business rebuilding wrecked cars for many years. Jerry loved animals and they always loved him (except mules). He always said “animals are the best judge of people”. He hunted when he was younger and through this taught his son many lessons about how to approach life and being responsible.
Jerry’s wishes were to be cremated. There will be no services due to the COVID 19 situation.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patty Nichol; children, Julie Minnihan, Andrew Nichol (Ji), sisters-in-law, Peg Bartling, Carole Nichol (the late Walter Dale), and Midge Thornton (David); also many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Gladys Nichol; first wife, Lori Nichol; children, Pam Nichol and Jennifer Nichol; one grandchild, Joel Minnihan; an infant sister, Beverly; two brothers, Walter Dale Nichol and Jim Nichol (Barb); son-in-law, Terry Minnihan and sister-in-law, Betty Partridge.
