James "Jim" Lee Coons

October 20, 1946 — December 27, 2016

Services for James 'Jim' Lee Coons, 70 of Chariton, will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Interment will follow at the Oxford Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to the Liberty Center American Legion. James Lee Coons was born October 20, 1946 to Ray and Ruth Coons in Chariton, Iowa. Jim was one of four children born to the couple. He graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1964. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the United States Naval Construction Forces as a Seabee (member of the Construction Battalion) from 1965 until 1969. On January 8, 1972, Jim was united in marriage to Margaret Ann McGowen in Harrisonville, Missouri. The couple was blessed with three daughters: Lenore, Amanda, and Laura. They raised their daughters in Chariton. Jim made a living as a Journeyman Lineman. He was active in the Internantional Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 55. He served as Union Steward and was on the Executive Board. In addition to being active in the IBEW, Jim was a member of the Liberty Center American Legion and also enjoyed spending time at the VFW. Jim loved spending time on his farm, shooting and hunting. He also enjoyed flying airplanes, gardening, riding motorcycles, attending bike rallies, and throwing great parties. More than anything, Jim enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a lot of love for his family and friends and was known to express his love by teasing them. He will be greatly missed by so many. Jim passed away December 27, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Coons; daughters: Lenore (Ed) Dick, Amanda (Jason) Demichelis, and Laura (Bryan) Williams; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; along with siblings: Joe (Jill) Coons and Irma (Larry) Thomas; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ray and Ruth Coons; and a sister, Lois Coons. Cemetery Details Oxford Cemetery Chariton, IA 50049
