James Julius Herold was born to Clarence and Vera Herold on May 29, 1934 on the family farm near Lacona. He attended country school and went to Milo High School graduating in 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 and was stationed in Germany.

He began dating Shirley Critz after meeting her at the Maid-Rite where she worked. The couple was married in March of 1956. They were blessed with four children: Rodney, Pamela, Christine, and Mark. Jim and Shirley also provided a loving and caring home to several foster children over the years.

Jim loved to farm. He began farming after his military service in the Army. At one time, he operated a Dairy Farm. He worked at Iowa Pack and Armstrong Tire. He also drove a school bus for Southeast Warren School District. Jim went on to work at Maytag where he retired after 32 years. After retiring from Maytag, he enjoyed driving the HIRTA bus for 13 years.

In retirement Jim and Shirley wintered in Arizona for 21 years, enjoying the weather and making many friends. He loved going camping during the summer and going fishing. Jim was a member of the Milo American Legion and enjoyed being part of the Milo 4th of July parades. Jim was a talented wood worker and made many beautiful pieces for his children and grandchildren. Grandchildren have many hope chests and cradles made by grandpa. His family and grandchildren were the greatest joy in his life. He enjoyed going to all of the grandchildren’s sporting events. He was always one of their biggest supporters.
Jim had a deep faith and had always belonged to and attended the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Germantown, serving as a church elder for many years.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents; and siblings: Lucille Barnes, Melvin Herold, Maxine Runyan, and Darrell Herold.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; children: Rodney Herold, Pamela (Jerry) Sinclair, Christine (Monty) Beard, Mark (Tammy) Herold, and Rick (Jean) Long; grandchildren: Kaitlyn Herold, Shawna (Tony) Beck, Nicki (Willie) Nelson, Monica (David) Cormeny, Mary (Reid) Simmer, Blake Beard, LeAnn (Austin) Grabill, Amber Ripperger, Skylar, and Ethan; 14 great grandchildren: Zeb, Zaddie, Payton, Cade, Kenzie, Hailey, Sophia, Eli, Korbin, Zoey, Hunter, Easton, Gage, and Sawyer; along with nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
