Irene Catherine (Robak) Sandmeier, age 92, of Knoxville, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at West Ridge Specialty Care in Knoxville.
Irene’s wishes were to be cremated and a visitation will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. with Irene’s family present to greet friends and relatives. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021, at 10:30 A.M., at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.
Irene was born on August 20, 1929, in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Pytka) Robak. She was raised there, and following high school attended Beauty College in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Irene was united in marriage to Warren Sandmeier on February 20, 1950, in Keene, New Hampshire. They were blessed with five children, Jack, Sandy, Patty, Tom, and Elaine. Irene and Warren enjoyed 26 years of marriage before his passing on March 27, 1976.
Irene worked as a hairdresser/cosmetologist until becoming a housewife and homemaker after her children were born. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and especially taking care of her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Jack (Tam) Sandmeier of Oklahoma City, OK, Sandy (Steve) Poulson of Plumas Lake, CA, Patty Harvey of Knoxville, Tom (Paula) Sandmeier of Knoxville, and Elaine (Chuck) Galeazzi of Knoxville; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Catherine Robak; husband, Warren Sandmeier; three brothers, Ernest, Mitzi, and Eddie Robak; one sister, Mary Jaszek; one grandson, Christopher Sandmeier; and one grandson-in-law, Jonathan Sinnard.
Memorials may be given in Irene’s memory to the Knoxville Public Library.
