Herb Ripperger was born September 1, 1926, to Glen and Grace Ripperger. He was the second of 6 siblings growing up in the Bauer area. He helped on the family farm before enlisting in the Army and serving in the Army Air Corps as an engine mechanic on B-29 Superfortress aircrafts. He was stationed in Texas, Mississippi, and Massachusetts before being discharged at the end of the war. After his service, he worked in Des Moines as a mechanic mostly working on tractors and farm equipment. His father asked him to come back to the farm and in 1950, he moved to the farm where he made his home for 50 years.

Herb met Ida Knochel from Colorado while she was visiting her sister in the Lacona area. Herb and Ida were married on February 16, 1955, in Stratton, Colorado. The couple made their home at the farm and raised their children: Donald, Carol, Duane, Mary, and Karen.

Herb loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time along with tinkering with anything on the farm. He could build just about anything and made many improvements to the land and the machinery on his farm. He loved to talk about farming and machinery when the opportunity arose and liked to go to tractor shows and parades. He loved restoring tractors and especially enjoyed his Oliver tractors. Auctions were also a favorite past time as he enjoyed seeing what items brought and who bought them.

Herb and Ida also enjoyed dancing and going to music jams. Ida was a great cook and baker which was nice for Herb since he had a bit of a sweet tooth and loved Ida’s homemade pie. Herb was a simple man, he didn’t need a lot to be happy, but he had a very deep faith and rarely missed church. His faith seemed to grow ever stronger through the years. Herb and Ida moved to Indianola in 2000. After Ida died in 2011, he was able to travel with his children out west to places like Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and California, he also enjoyed trips to Washington D.C. and Virginia and especially liked going to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and also going on a trip to Indiana to find relatives there.

Herb passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022, at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 19 days. Preceding him in death were his wife, Ida; and siblings: Lawrence, Fred, Anna Marie Blair, Wayne, and infant brother, Paul. He will be greatly missed by his children: Donald (Rose) Ripperger, Carol Ripperger, Duane (Karen) Ripperger, Mary (Rick) Zimmerman, and Karen (Joe) Wallace; 9 grandchildren: Kelly (Chris) Zwirlein, Chad Ripperger, Joe (Jennifer) Ripperger, Michael Ripperger, Daniel (Kyla) Ripperger, Karen (Mike) Dylo, Mitch (Jodi) Zimmerman, Stephanie (Michael) Carswell, and Tyler Wallace; 7 great grandchildren: Zach, Jensen, Haley, Madelyn, Isla, Cooper, Adalynn, and one on the way, Reed; along with sisters-in-law: Sara Ripperger and Betty Wachter; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
