George Gilbert Garton was born at home in Humeston, Iowa on May 5th, 1930. He passed away in Chariton, Iowa on May 4th, 2022. Gilbert was raised in Wayne County and received his education there, graduating from Chariton High School in 1948.
Gilbert graduated from Iowa State University in 1952 and then served in the US Air Force in Japan during the Korean War, until 1955. He married Sherrill Ann Johnson in 1959. Three children were born: Alyse, Shawn and Aaron.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his son, George Russell and grandson, Shawn Fawcett; parents, George R. and Nettie L. Garton; siblings, Richard C. Garton and M. Imogene Kinnear.
He is survived by wife, Sherrill Garton of Chariton; daughter, Alyse (Nick) Hunter of Chariton; sons, Shawn (Cee Cee) Garton of Chariton and Aaron (Carol) Garton of Shawnee, KS; seven grandchildren: Ashlynn (Chris) Rosa, Abram (Mandi) Hunter, Ailey (James) Carroll, Mariah (Cole) Pierschbacher, Micah Garton, Macauley (Kelsey) Garton, and Ally (Cord) Williams; and seven great grandchildren: Lincoln, Stella, Axele, Elodie, Briar, Steel and Charlie.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Gilbert’s life.
