Gerald “Gerry” Walter Hoch was born April 3, 1936 to Alban and Leona Hoch at their farm near Bauer, Iowa. Gerry was one of fourteen children born to the couple. He was raised on the family farm alongside his siblings and attended Bauer School through the 8th grade. Gerry loved working with his family on their farm.
In 1956, Gerry enlisted in the United States Army. He served for two years in Germany, driving a jeep for the General in the tank unit.
In July of 1961, Gerry married Wilma Jean Brentano. The couple was blessed with three children: Tamara, Sonia, and Chadrick. Gerry and Wilma divorced in 1972. In 1983, Gerry married Janet Reese, although they later divorced, he remained close to her family.
Gerry enjoyed taking vacations with his kids in the 70s. He especially enjoyed their trips to Niagara Falls and Canada. Family was always important to Gerry. He enjoyed any time spent with his children, grandchildren, and siblings. Times spent fishing, hunting, sitting around a bonfire, and playing countless games of solo, pitch, and rummy with family were cherished by Gerry. He also liked working on puzzles.
Gerry worked for Maytag for over thirty years. He enjoyed the work there and did many different jobs for the company throughout the years. He also looked forward to carpooling to and from work with “the guys”. Gerry retired from Maytag in 1991.
As much as Gerry enjoyed his job, his farm was his favorite place to be. He loved farming, working with cattle, working on the tractor, and tending to his garden. Gerry was also a great cook. He was a meat and potato man and made the best mashed potatoes with meat gravy and great fried potatoes.
Gerry had a deep faith and was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Gerry did work around Sacred Heart for years.
Gerry was a great grandpa. He loved his grandchildren and never hesitated to take all four at once. The grandkids looked forward to hay rack rides with grandpa and devouring the great breakfasts that he made for them.
Gerry was a simple person, but he enjoyed life. In the end, Gerry found joy in the simple things. Smoking his pipe or cigarettes, enjoying a cup of coffee, being around his cats, his dog Nipper, and piddling in the garden.
Gerry passed away February 16, 2022. He will be dearly missed by his children: Tamara Hoch, Sonia (Pat) Marsh, and Chadrick Hoch; grandchildren: Megan, Nicole, Jara (Jordan), Shayla (Eli), and Kim; great grandchildren: Dajien, Davaron, Deleecia, Jackson, Sofia, Kysen, Deakon, Ainslee, and Kaembrii; and siblings: Clifford (Joann) Hoch, Darlene Hoch, Naomi Coppick, Pat Slykhuis, Marj Simmerman, Elaine (Fred) Garity, Rolland (Jean) Hoch, Arnold (Linda) Hoch, and Diane (Tom) King.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Hoch; brother, Willard Hoch; sister, Beatrice Lenger; and infant sister, Mary Helen Hoch.
A special thank you to Kaye Shilling and family; and the Janet Reese family for their love and friendship over the years.
