Franklin J. Dittmer was born December 18, 1936, to Robert and Margaret (Schurman) Dittmer in rural Lucas County near Lacona. He grew up in the Lacona area. After school he worked as a janitor and later as the bus mechanic / superintendent for SEW Schools.
In 1956 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Wallace and to this union they were blessed with Debra, Robert, Anita, and Nadine. Marilyn passed away in 2006. In 2007 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Heaton.
Franklin was a hard worker and in 1960’s he worked for Bobby Obrien Construction, Merrick, JD Armstrong, and Dusenberg Construction. While working construction he traveled with the family all over the state of Iowa. In 1969 he moved back to Lacona and worked on the family farm, before opening Dittmer Sales and Services. Which he owned and operated for 22 years. He owned and operated Whole Punch for 5 years. He then worked McConnell Concessions for 20 years until his last figure 8 race on May 22, 2021.
He would often say he had 84 years of learning at the University of Life. Part of that learning came from his love of being a member of the Lacona Fire Department, Warren Co Mutual, and Western Iowa Mutual Insurance. He was an EMT / Firefighter volunteer for 42 years, holding the positions of Rescue Chief and Fire Captain. He was appointed to City Council and then later voted in as mayor of Lacona.
He enjoyed bluegrass and country music, square dancing, camping, spending winters in Texas, collecting A&W and Coke items, and playing cards. Coke, cashews, chicken, and chocolate were some of his favorite foods.
Franklin will be greatly missed by his wife Charlotte; children: Debra Dittmer, Robert (Marina) Dittmer, Anita Dittmer, and Nadine Thompson; grandchildren: Jeremy (Jessica) Dittmer, Amber Dittmer, Nate Thompson, Zoey Thompson, Curtis Weis, Rebecca Heaton, William Heaton, and Jared Heaton; great grandchildren: Brooklyn, Paul, Waylon, Connor, and Logan; siblings: Germain (Mary Ellen) Dittmer, Mary Lou (Leon) Hartogh, Lola Sternquist, Deloris (Don) Van Ryswyk, Roberta (Dick) Burnett, Jolene Dittmer, Wendell (Vicki) Dittmer, Ruby (Neil) Moon, Matt (Becky) Dittmer, and Marjorie (Steve) Worley; many extended family and friends.
