Evelyn (Van Hal) Vanden Oever was born on April 28, 1931, to Jacob and Dena (Spoelstra) Van Hal. She grew up in the rural Sully area. She married James Vanden Oever in 1951. They lived on farms in the rural Otley area. They were blessed with three children: Leland, Jacqueline, and Julie.

In 1973, the couple moved to the farm where she was a homemaker. Not only was she a loving mother taking care of her children, but she also sewed, quilted, baked, canned, and helped out wherever needed. After Julie started school, she began working outside the home in various compacities. Her most recent roles were Activity Coordinator and Chariton Middle School kitchen lady.

In October 2009, she moved from the farm to Chariton. James passed away October 2009. She continued to stay busy by taking different bus trips and was also a member of the Red Hatters.

Evelyn’s faith was very important to her. Throughout her life, she was an active church member, most recently the Chariton United Methodist Church. She was also involved in the Inter-Church Council and BSF Bible Studies in Chariton.

Evelyn loved her family and was an exceptional grandmother. She had an unconditional love for all of her family and was truly one of their biggest cheerleaders when it came to supporting them in their endeavors. She was a generous soul and thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with people. She loved surprises and was always up for an adventure, even enjoying some tubing on the water occasionally.

Evelyn will be missed dearly by her children: Leland (Terry) Vanden Oever and Jaci (Chad) Ray; grandchildren: Ben Vanden Oever, Crystal (Roger) Fitzpatrick, Alicia Vanden Oever, Adam (Stephanie) Vanden Oever, Angela Matthews, Carrine (David) Swift, Sonya (Lupe) Loynachan-Perez, Tracy (Jason Funke) Loynachan, Isaac (Courtney) Loynachan, Daniel (Andrea Hull) Ray, Alan Ray, Melissa (Robby) Colburn, and Shane (Patricia) Moody; great grandchildren: Travis (Chelsey) Vanden Oever, Gabriel Vanden Oever, Landon Colburn, Raegan Colburn, Camden Fitzpatrick, Caelyn Swift, Marissa Swift, Nathan Fitzpatrick, Richelle Vanden Oever, Brenan Colburn, Juliana Moody, Katelyn Moody, Elliot, Aidan, and Lucas Loynachan-Perez, Alexandria and Theodore Loynachan-Funke, and Harriet Ray; great great granddaughter, Aria Vanden Oever; siblings: Darlene (Glenn) Summers, Cornie (Marinella) Van Hal, and Nancy (Carl) Jensen; sisters-in-law: Carolyn Van Hal, Shirley Van Hal, Ruth Van Hal, Darlene Van Hal, and Ruth Vanden Oever.
