Elaine H. Keeney

Elaine H. Keeney, 85 of Chariton, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Clarke County Hospital. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Chariton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Chariton. Elaine Harlene Keeney was born on July 16,1931 to Harley and Golda Shore, at home on a farm northwest of Williamson, Iowa. She was the youngest of 5 children. A 'contest' was held among the siblings to name their new sister with Luella's entry being the one chosen. Elaine's siblings Luella Bebout, Raymond Shore, Aletha Feight, and Eithel Gookin, all preceded her in death. The family moved to Chariton when she was a young girl. On August 9, 1953, the love of her life, Harley Keeney Jr., swept her away in marriage. To this union were born Bruce, Brian and Teresa. Harley and Elaine provided a loving, nurturing and wonderful home for their three children. Their home was often filled with relatives who gathered for birthdays and holidays, Sunday dinners, and many times for no other reason than to just fellowship together. Elaine began working at Hy-Vee Headquarters in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 17. She was a faithful employee for 46 years until her retirement in 1995 at the age of 63. She was largely responsible for generating weekly paychecks for store managers. A photo of Elaine can be found in the Hy-Vee Hall of Fame at the current headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa. Elaine is survived by her children: Bruce Keeney (Becky) of Jefferson, Iowa, Brian Keeney (Rebecca) of Leon, Iowa and Teresa of Chariton, Iowa; grandchildren Lynelle Rowley (Colin) of Meban, North Carolina, Greg Keeney of Jefferson, Iowa, Aaron Keeney (Katie) of Leon, Iowa, Joel Keeney of Leon, Iowa, Mikala Wood (Caleb) of Pella, Iowa and Brianna Keeney of Leon, Iowa; and 7 great-grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Golda Shore; her husband of 62 years, Harley Keeney Jr.; and siblings: Aletha Feight, Eithel Gookin, Luella Bebout, and Raymond Shore. Elaine lived the majority of her life absent of any health problems until recent years. The many health problems she did have were just too much. Being a faithful servant of the Lord, we rest in the assurance she has a new life in heaven where she has been reunited with the love of her life after only a 13-1/2 month "inconvenient" separation.
