Dwaine Earl Evans was born on August 7, 1941, to Kermit and Beatrice (Perkins) Evans at home on the family farm in Derby, Iowa. He attended the Fisher country school, later graduating from Derby High School in 1959. After serving two years in the National Guard, he moved back home with his parents.
Growing up, Dwaine helped his dad and uncles raise Duroc hogs which were sold at annual production sales. In 1950, Dwaine’s dad began selling Angus bulls. Dwaine continued the tradition for over 70 years growing Evans Angus Farms into what it is today. He was also a long-time dealer for Dekalb Seed Corn as well as other ag products.
He met the love of his life, Twyla (Barnett), at Nick’s Café at the Junction on a Saturday evening. The couple married on September 10, 1967, in Corydon, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with four children: Pat, Kim, Julie, and Bill. They made their home half a mile east of the family farm. Dwaine and Twyla moved back to his childhood farm in 2001 to care for his dad.
Dwaine was always a hard worker and very involved with his community. He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Farmers’ Co-op, Lucas County Farm Bureau, and Mormon Trail School Board. He also served on the Lucas County FSA Committee.
Dwaine loved his family, especially his grandkids. He enjoyed teaching them fun things, often getting them into mischief. He attended as many of their sporting events as possible and rarely missing a livestock show. He made it a priority to attend the Lucas County Fair as well as the Iowa State Fair.
One of Dwaine’s great passions was to continue the Evans family tradition of making molasses. He enjoyed passing the knowledge to the next generations as well as sharing a few stories from the past. Several members of the family and community would gather to accomplish the labor-intensive process and shared in the sweet results.
Dwaine will be dearly missed by his wife, Twyla; children: Pat (Amy) Evans, Kim (Doug) Head, Julie (Marshal) Schlutz, and Bill (Alison) Evans; grandchildren: James Evans, Ethan Evans, Blake Evans, Logan Evans, Levi Evans, Matt Evans, Devin (Branigan) Head, Chelsea (Alex) Gray, Derek Head, and Baylee Head, Hannah Schlutz, Cayden Schlutz, Colton Schlutz, and Liam Evans, Marlie Evans, and Hadley Evans; great grandchildren: Sayge Polo-Head, Brayton Head, Dallas Head, Stockton Head, Winchester Gray, and Axel Gray; siblings, Marilyn (Doyle) Reynolds and Linda (Jerry) Arnold, sisters-in-law Linda Campbell and Cleva Johannes (Dennis), brother-in-law Rick Barnett (Gayle) and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Lola Mae Evans.
