Donna Mae (Curtis) Hunter was born on December 15, 1930 to H.L. and Hildor Curtis in Glasgow, MT. She was raised alongside her sisters, Maxine and Shirley, in Richland, Montana. Donna had fond memories of helping her father at the station for work. In 1946, Donna’s family moved to Chariton, Iowa. She attended Chariton High School and graduated with the class of 1948.

In June of 1953, Donna was united in marriage to Robert Byrum Hunter and they began life on their farm south of Lucas. The couple was blessed with four children: Kim, Mike, Tamra and Nick. Bob and Donna enjoyed working on the farm together for almost sixty years. While raising her children, she milked cows, raised chickens, grew a huge garden, sewed her own and children’s clothes on occasion, baked four loaves of bread weekly, went square dancing with Bob, and enjoyed frequent gatherings with friends. As a family, they treasured family vacations to the Ozarks and snow skiing. In addition to working on the farm, Donna worked as a teacher’s aide in Lucas followed by 23 years of service in the Lucas County Treasurer’s Office. Donna lived out the phrase hard-working. In all things she did, whether baking, sewing, or gardening; she aimed for precision. After retiring from the treasurer’s office, her quilting activities greatly increased – making hundreds of quilts in her life, and hundreds more handmade items.

Donna was an active member in the community. She was a member of Lucas Betterment, Chariton Valley Piecemakers, TTT, the Lucas Presbyterian Church, and the Red Hat Society.

Donna passed away July 20, 2021 at the age of 90. She will be dearly missed by her children: Kim (Mike) Rehm, Mike (Laurie) Hunter, Tamra (Rick) Stevenson, and Nick (Alyse) Hunter; grandchildren: Derek (Ashley) Rehm and Samantha (Brett) Irigoin, Branigan (Devin) Head, Justine (granddaughter-in-law) Stevenson, Kirn (Ashlee) Stevenson and Lacy Stevenson, Ashlynn (Chris) Rosa, Abram (Mandi) Hunter, Ailey (James) Carroll, and Mariah (Cole) Pierschbacher; 14 great-grandchildren: Jameson, Aspen, Russell, Sayge, Brayton, Dallas, Nolan, Harper, Berklee, Lincoln, Stella, Axele, Elodie, Briar, and one more on the way; and sister, Shirley McKenney. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, H.L. and Hildor Curtis; husband, Bob Hunter; sister, Maxine Tracy; daughter-in-law, Connie R. Hunter; and grandson, Chasen Stevenson.
