Della Minnie (Akers) Miller was born December 25, 1931, in Story County, Iowa to Madison and Virginia Akers. She was married to the love of her life, Richard Miller, on February 18, 1952, at the Indianola bus station by the Justice of the Peace. Richard and Della moved into their home in rural Ackworth on June 13, 1953, where Della lived until her death on April 12, 2023. Richard and Della were blessed with seven children: Diane, Nancy, Deb, Rick, Rocky, Nettie and Tim.
Della was a hard worker and did so many things. She wallpapered and painted many homes in the Warren County area. She loved taking care of her family, and she would help anyone needing care after surgery or illness. She also was a childcare provider in her home for many years. For a time, she worked at Iowa Paint and also at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Della loved to garden, and every year she would can hundreds of jars of vegetables as well as fruit, jelly and meat. She also raised pigs and chickens, and she milked several cows. She loved baking pies, and her homemade noodles were legendary. What she loved most was having a house full of family, friends and children, and then cooking and serving all of that food she had worked hard to prepare…and then of course an evening of cards.
Della was preceded in death by her husband Richard; daughter, Nancy Horton; son, Rick Miller; 2 grandsons; 2 great grandchildren; parents, Madison and Virginia Akers; sisters Mable and Alice, and brother, Earbie.
Della will be dearly missed by her surviving children: Diane (Charles) Hougland, Paul Horton, Deb (Mark) Peterson, Rocky Miller, Nettie (David) Schaffer, and Tim (Kenda) Miller, 25 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren plus one on the way.
