Darlene Scales Smyser Russell, Iowa Funeral services for Darlene Smyser, 84, will be Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends beginning at 10 AM on Saturday before the services. Interment will be in the Cambria Cemetery. Memorials to the Activity Fund at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. Condolences may be left for the family at www.pierschbacherfuneralhome.com . Darlene was born in Cambria, Iowa on July 9, 1923, the daughter of Jess and Viola Abel. She passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. Darlene was united in marriage in 1946 to Joseph Adam Scales. They were blessed with two daughters: JoAnn and Linda Sue. The family lived and farmed a few miles from Cambria for 21 years. Darlene also worked at Gross Galesburg for over twenty years until they relocated in 1977. She then worked at Chamberlain's in Albia an later at the Country Chef in Chariton. Darlene spent her life caring for her family. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and needle point. Darlene was preceded in death by her daughter Linda Sue Carlson, her parents Jess and Viola Abel; husband Joseph Scales; three sisters: Evelyn Stewart, Pauline McKinney, and Jean Richard. She is survived by her daughter JoAnn Gilanshah of Bloomington, MN; grandsons: Rick and Tim Carlson of Des Moines, great grandchildren: Brandi, Gabby, and Dani Carlson; and many wonderful and caring nieces and nephews.
