The family moved to Iowa and Dan graduated from Centerville High School with the class of 1966. After graduation, Dan joined the United States Marine Corps. He served almost two years of active duty from October of 1967 to July of 1969; one year was spent on tour in Vietnam. Dan was transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve in July of 1969 and was honorably discharged in October of 1973. Dan was united in marriage to Pauline Wyckoff on February 23, 1968. To this union two children were born, Daniel and Jacqueline. On July 20, 1985, Dan was united in marriage to Lisa Johnson. They were blessed with two children, Ashlee and Kristofer. Dan was a very dedicated and hard worker. His first job was with the Union Carbide Food Processing Plant in Centerville. He then became a police officer and probation officer. At the age of twenty-five, Dan became the Chariton police chief and the youngest police chief in Iowa's history. Dan was also a proud Hy-Vee employee and worked for the company for thirty-three years, retiring in 2009. Dan enjoyed spending time outdoors working around the yard, landscaping, woodworking, sightseeing, and working on his tractors and mowers. He loved history, politics, and talk radio. Above all else, Dan loved spending time with his family. He was a dedicated husband, Father, grandfather, and great grandfather and he worked hard to teach his children life skills and to show them that they were loved. Dan will be missed by his wife, Lisa; children: Daniel (Tracy) Kozak of St. Charles, Jacque (Corey) Gwinn of Chariton, Ashlee (Kyle) Raines of Ankeny, and Kristofer Kozak of West Des Moines; 6 grandchildren: Brittany, Brandon, Blake, Shaylee, Kylee, and Jax; and 2 great grandchildren: Lillian and Lane.
